1. Prologue
Long ago, in a far away kingdom there lived a prince. He was handsome but he was spoiled; all of his servants feared his temper- after all, shouldn’t you fear A Beast? The King and Queen feared their son as well, but instead of facing him and teaching him right from wrong- they left him. The Beast grew up mostly alone through his childhood, with a lone servant remaining scarce to make sure he would not perish; but even that servant’s patience wore away in time…
He sent his handsome self to school each day and let the girls gaze in amazement at his body and face; he let them love him… because he could not love himself.
Each mirror in his palace was broken, the shards of glass littered the halls and stuck into his bare feet. Every time he had passed a mirror, he didn’t see a handsome man, he saw the Beast within and sought to shatter his beautiful exterior. No one should love his outside when they all fled from the Beast they saw within.
On each birthday he received a single rose. The card was signed anonymously but the message remained the same, “You must learn to love yourself.”
He laughed and threw the card into the shadows but continued sitting on the roof, stroking the red velvet petals and wondering… ‘Who could ever learn to love a Beast?’
